Weekend Adventures From National Geographic

We're approaching Mid-March, which in the Norther Hemisphere means that Spring is in the air. Time to open the windows, let in the fresh breeze, head back outside, and take in some outdoor adventure. If that sounds like a great way to shed the cabin fever, then check out this story over at the National Geographic Adventure website.

The article consists of some great suggestions for weekend getaways, with most geographic regions of the country represented, so most likely something is close to where you live. For instance, if you live out in California, hiking a petroglyph canyon like the ones found in the Upper Mojave Desert. Live further up the Pacific Coast? Try fly fishing in the Yakima River in Washington or take in some spring skiing in Oregon. Further East, take in some white water action in Alabama at the Little River Canyon National Preserve or ski a completely different region at theBalsams Grand Resort Hotel in New Hampshire.

Overall, some good suggestions, although I do have a bone to pick with the writer. For my area, in Texas, they recommend heading to Wildcatter Ranch to live out your Cowboy Fantasies, which would make for a fine weekend getaway. However, they list it as a being in "Hill Country" despite the fact that it's "90 minutes northwest of Fort Worth". I live in Austin, which is much further South, and THIS is Hill Country. Not that stuff they have up North. ;)

Oh, and if you want an adventure of a completely different kind in Austin this weekend, checkout SXSW. (South By South West) With something like 800 bands playing, dozens of films being shown, and interactive panels on all kinds of topics, it's become one of the premiere creative events in the country.
