Ripley Davenport's Solo, Unassisted Mongolia Trek
Adventure World Magazine has posted a story about Ripley Davenport, the British Adventurer I've mentioned a few times in the past who is planning a solo and unassisted trek across Mongolia in 2010.
Ripley plans to get underway in April of next year, and will travel more than 1700 miles on foot across the Mongolian Steppe, Gobi Desert and the Altai Mountain Range. He'll be completely self-sufficient, carrying all of his gear with him, with the help of a specially designed wheeled trailer that will serve as a desert sled not unlike those used in the Antarctic. If successful, this will be the longest solo and unassisted trek ever completed.
As you can imagine, the training and preparation for such an expedition can be quite demanding. Ripley has been working on the logistics and physical training for months, and Adventure World notes that he'll be contributing his expertise on preparing for this journey on their website and print magazine. Expect the former British special forces officer to discuss the gear he'll be using, the physical and mental preparations he is undergoing prior to his departure, and more. It should prove very insightful for anyone interested in what it takes to make a solo expedition of any type.
