The Rest of Everest: Episode 51

The latest episode of The Rest of Everest is now available for your viewing pleasure, and if you thought last week's summit episode was the end of the story, as it tends to be in these kinds of documentaries, you're in for a surprise.

The latest episode is entitled Episode 51: A Different Atmosphere, and it opens with Jon visiting neighboring camps and friends, to let them know that the team had reached the summit. The video in this portion is a bit difficult to watch, as Jon mostly meant to record audio reactions to the news, which is of course very positive, but we see little more than the camera being pointed at the ground.

The next portion of the episode shows the relief and satisfaction in Base Camp as everyone begins to hear from the climbers and their successful summits. There is a more festive atmosphere in camp, especially amongst the Indian contingent, where there was singing, dancing, and drinking.

Most of the time when we watch climbing videos or movies, we see the teams reach the top, and if we're lucky, we're treated to some scenes of them descending the mountain as well, but we rarely see the reaction of the support teams in BC. This episode gives us a rare glimpse at the jubilation that they must feel as well. Climbing Everest is a team effort, and even though not everyone goes up to the summit, they all share in the risks, the tension, and the fear for themselves and their friends who are going up. It was a lot of fun to see the reactions back in Base Camp. This is especially true of long time viewers of The Rest of Everest, as we've seen these other teams before as well.

Two other quick notes. If you haven't done so already, don't forget to head over to The Podcast Awards and nominate The Rest of Everest in the "Travel" category. And finally, I have to say, ROE looks great on an iPhone! ;)
