Racing The Planet: Vietnam
Racing The Planet, the fine folks who are behind the 4 Deserts series of ultramarathons, are branching out with a new race beginning next week in a remote region of Vietnam.
Appropriately dubbed Racing The Planet: Vietnam, the new event will follow the same format as the 4 Desert races. The 250km course, located in the Northwest region of the country, near the border with China, will snake through a very remote and rugged section of Vietnam. The competition is broken down into 6 stages of varying lengths with the first stage getting underway on Monday, Feb. 18th. The race will run through Feb. 23rd.
So far there are 60 competitors from 22 countries and 5 continents. Seven of these are veterans of other Racing The Planet events. For the first time ever there will be a team from Vietnam competing in one of these races, which has to be a real treat since they get to be the "host team" and probably have a decent working knowledge of the environment.
I'll follow the race next week once it gets underway. The Racing The Planet events are always well received and the athletes tend to have a great time, but they often take place in such remote environments that it's hard to find out exactly what is happening out on the course. Hopefully that won't be the case this time, but we'll have to wait and see.
