Adventure Racing News From South Africa

More interesting Adventure Racing news out of South Africa again today, starting with an update from the Swazi Xtreme race that I wrote about last Friday. The event came to a close on Monday, following 60 hours of racing through some of the most remote and demanding terrain in South Africa.

Much of the 250km course was experienced on mountain bike, but there was still plenty of trekking, climbing, and paddling to go around, including Class IV rapids that kept the competitors on their toes. It was an intense three and a half days of racing that mixed in all the usual adventure racing disciplines, plus the challenges of navigation, and although it was a close race down to the end, reigning champs Team Cyanosis, once again took home the crown.

For an excellent race report and recap of the event check out this blog post at the Swazi Extreme Blog. (photo by Jacques Marais)

In other AR news from South Africa, fans of the sport who have been inspired by the Swazi Xtreme may want to take note, as they now have an opportunity of their own to join in the fun. The Abu Dhabi Adventure Challenge has once again extended an invitation to www.AR.co.za to field a team to participate in this year's event, taking place from December 4th to the 9th.

If you'd like to tryout for the team, applications are now being accepted. Simply head on over to www.AR.co.za and throw your hat in the ring for the opportunity to compete in one of the biggest adventure races on the planet. Applications are being accepted until June 1st, and the plan is to have the team picked by the end of June, giving them a full five months to prepare. Personally, I'd love to join the team, but I fail on the first qualification. I'm not South African. Good luck to everyone and have fun!

Thanks to Lisa from www.AR.co.za for both of these stories!
