Karakorum Update: The Window Is Open!
K2Climb.net has posted a Karakorum weather update and as predicted the skies have cleared, the sun is shining, and it looks like there will be good weather through the weekend.
This is great news for teams that have been waiting for the opportunities on K2 and the Gasherbrums. The Russians in C5 on the West Face of K2 may already be making their way to the top as I write this, while Gerfried Goeschl's team is making for C2 on the Abruzzi Spur. I'm sure over the next day or two, we'll be hearing about a lot of movement, including news on Dodo Kopold's alpine style climb.
Word from the Gasherbrums is that while the sun is shining and the weather looks great, avalanches continue at the higher altitudes. The teams there will wait out the day in BC and let the mountain clear itself of dangerous, loose snows, before proceeding up. Look for Mario Merelli's Italian Team to being their push tomorrow, after the avalanches subside.
Right now, the forecast calls for clear weather through Sunday, and possibly beyond. It looks like the teams that showed patience, and waited for this window will be rewarded soon. Watch for summit news in the next few days.
