40 Years of Vinson!
TrailSpace.com has posted an excellent article on the 40th Anniversary of the first ascent of Mt. Vinson, the tallest peak in Antarctica. The story is actually a trip report, written by Bill Straka, on a recent expedition to the mountain to mark the occassion.
Bill read a report about the team going, and sought out the advice of his neighbor, Nick Clinch, who just so happened to be on the team that made that first ascent. Nick encouraged Bill to go to the Antarctic to make the climb, and so a new adventure was launched.
The article does a great job of explainging the logistics of such a climb, including getting to Patriot HIlls, and then moving on from there to Vinson itself. Setting up base camp, establishing other camps on the mountain, and interacting with the other climbers. The photos that accompany the article are also very nice, and set the (rather cold) scene quite nicely. It's an excellent read and I recommend it for anyone wanting to see a "big picture" view of an expedition of this type.
