National Geographic Launches "Places of a Lifetime"
Back in 1999 National Geographic Traveler published a piece called "Places of a Lifetime" which spotlighted 50 unique places, all over the planet, that any globe trotting traveler shouldn't miss. Now, eight years later, NationalGeographic.com is finally bringing the list online.
They've started off with ten iconic cities that are sure to inspire you to want to travel. The list includes places like New York City, London, Paris, Rome, Hong Kong, and more. And once you select a city you'd like to visit, you are presented with a lot of information on that place in the form of lists of top hotels, things to do while visiting, reports on the nightlife, and more. There are also multimedia tours of the cities, with photo galleries and walking maps. Finally, as a primer for the would-be traveler, there is yet still more information "the basics", cultural tips, shopping, and so on.
The intention is to eventually get the entire list of 50 "Places" online, and to make the site a database for travelers who want to know more about the destinations they're off to. So far things are looking good, and it seems like it'll grow into a very helpful resource, but it would be great if there was a really nice online forum in place for travelers to exchange their own nuggets of wisdom about these places, making it a bit more interactive and relevant in the long term. Still, it'll be fun to watch the list grow as they add more to it.
