Himalaya and Karakorum Winter Update: Broad Peak Team Reaches C3
Updates from the Himalaya and Karakorum have been kind of few and far between the past few weeks, but the teams are still there and still making progress towards their goals. The Czech team on Manaslu has been the most quiet, having not made a dispatch since December 19th. We can only assume that everything is proceeding according to plan and they continue to acclimatize on schedule.
Simone Moro and climbing partner Denis Urubko still have plans to climb Makalu this winter, but for now they're enjoying a leisurely stroll through the Khumbu Valley where the are slowly acclimatizing as well. They should head to the mountain in another week or so, where they hope to make an alpine style climb on the only 8000m Himalayan peak to remain unclimbed in winter.
Don Bowie is making regular updates to his website however, as he, Robert Szymczak, and Artur Hajzer continue as scheduled on Broad Peak. Today's update informs us that the team has climbed above 7000 meters and established camp 3. Don says that the weather is brutally cold at the moment, with steady winds and more snow than they were anticipating as well. Having set-up C3 however, they'll now descend once again to base camp before preparing for the next acclimatization climb. Don has also posted more great videos from the mountain, as you can see below.
