Jeopardy! Winner Hikes The East Coast
David Madden, whose previous claim to fame was that he won $430,000 on the game show Jeopardy! has a new challenge in front of him. Madden has set out from New Brunswick, Canada to hike the entire East Coast, to the Florida Keys in an effort to raise money and awareness for the Fisher House Foundation, an organization that helps family members of wounded veterans stay near their loved ones while they go through therapy.
Traditionally when you think about a hike of this length on the East Coast, the Appalachian Trail comes to mind. However, Madden has specifically avoided the AT so that he could be close to the public to further help the cause he's raising funds for. His trail will take him through New Jersey to Philadelphia, Charlotte, Atlanta and Jacksonville as he makes his way to the very tip of Florida itself. He's even set up a blog for anyone who wants to follow along.
In this Q&A interview over at NorthJersey.com he says that he generally makes about 10-15 miles per day in urban areas, and about 20-25 miles per day in rural sections. On his best day so far, he's managed to knock off 32 miles in one hike. Pretty impressive.
Thanks to the GoBlog for this one.
