Unicycling To Everest Base Camp
When you think of extreme sports, unicycling doesn't really leap to mind, despite the recent posts I've made on mountain unicycling. Perhaps that will change next week when U.K. "extreme unicycler" Steve Colligan will set out to ride his unicycle to Everest Base Camp.
According to this story over at Metro, Colligan has been riding his unicycle for about 8 years, and mounting cycling for six. He's ridden some of the more challenging trails in the U.K., including those found in the Lake District, and he's even gone down Snowden and Ben Nevis.
But this will be his biggest challenge yet, as he'll be riding more than 600 miles from Lhasa, Tibet to Kathmandu, Nepal, going through Everest Base Camp along the way. The trail will see him traversing through five mountain passes of over 5000 meters in height. He'll also have to negotiate one of the biggest descents in the world, a trail of more than 4600 meters.
Colligan is undertaking this adventure in order to raise money for a school in Nepal and you can learn more about him and his cause over at UnicyclingSteve.com, which seems to be down at the time of this writing.
Sounds like a fun ride. I'd just require two wheels instead of one.
