Jon Bowermaster and Team Launch Antarctica 2008 Expedition

Explorer and writer Jon Bowermaster has set off for Antartica along with his intrepid group of paddlers. Over the course of the next several weeks, they will be exploring the Weddell Sea via Kayak in an effort to measure the effects of global warming on the region. The team will be the first people to actually visit the Larsen Iceshelf to take measurements of how quickly it is receding due to climate changes.

The Antarctica 2008 Expedition is in conjunction with Will Steger's Global Warming 101 expedition that visited the Baffin Islands last Spring in an effort to take similar measurements on how climate change has effected that region, and the Inuit people that live there.

Bowermaster and his team will be posting regular dispatches, as well as photos, audio, and video, on their website as they explore the icy Antarctic Sea and return to the scene of the sinking of the MS Explorer last month. You may recall that Jon was on one of the first ships that arrived to render aid. From what I've heard, the oil leaking from the ship there has already had an impact on the environment as well.

Bowermaster is a Mountain Hardwear sponsored athlete, the lucky bastard, and you'll be able to read updates in their Hardwear Sessions Blog as well.
